Great things are taking place around the State and Nation. As many of you know the year, 1999 has been designated by the United Nations as the "International Year of Older Persons." The theme for the year, TOWARD A SOCIETY FOR ALL AGES, has been selected to bring attention to the contributions and needs of older persons and to promote the philosophy that societies should be inclusive in nature, should embrace all populations and should share their resources equally. This year long celebration will be an excellent opportunity to recognize all age groups and draw attention to special contributions of older people around the State. In designating 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons, Governor James and I are optimistic that in this coming decade we will witness an expansion of programs and services for the elderly of this State. The immediate goal of the Alabama Commission on Aging (ACOA) is to encourage Alabamas Aging Network, Area Agencies on Aging, the State Legislature, State Agencies, community based organizations, etc., to kick off Alabamas celebration during the month of October. Therefore we would be honored to have you join us for a Special Kickoff Event on October 14,1998, in the Archives Room at the State Capitol Building in Montgomery from 11:00 am. until 2:00 p.m. We are planning to titillate your culinary taste buds with an international flair of exquisite foods and hors d oeuvres during this reception. One of the highlights during this event will be Governor James signing the Proclamation proclaiming the year of 1999 as The Year of Older Persons in Alabama. We invite you to take a very active role in promoting this celebration in your area. It is our hope to stimulate organizations and agencies around the state to develop projects and build networks to publicize and celebrate the International Year of Older Persons. Working together we can all create an atmosphere that will draw attention to and encourage this year long observance of honor, respect and appreciation for Alabamas Senior Citizens. This is ACOAs effort to unite and increase dialogue among all persons who work with older people. For more information on the "International Year of Older Persons", please feel free to contact your local Area Agency on Aging or the Alabama Commission on Aging at 1-800-741-5463. ~ Published October 1998, Alabama
