February is a busy, event-filled month. In celebration of Mardi Gras, we chose the City of Mobile's festivities for our cover and a colorful article. Historically, Mobile was the first city in the United States to hold a Mardi Gras celebration. This year, the city promises an even bigger and better Fat Tuesday.

In recognition of Black History Month, our photo essay focuses on the positive aspects of a diverse society’s shift from crucible to catalyst in Montgomery and other major cities and towns in Alabama.

On another note, our essayist, Major Cox, is taking a short sabbatical to restore his passion for writing. We wish him well and look forward to his return to the magazine.

Valentine's Day brightens the month with traditional red, heart-shaped boxes of chocolates, bouquets of flowers and arrow-bearing cupids. Why not surprise the love of your life or a dear friend with an old-fashioned homemade greeting card constructed from paper lace doilies and red paper? Fun to make and delightful to receive!

In recent years, February has been designated as Heart Month...with special reminders from cardiologists of things to do to keep your heart healthy. Please read and take to heart the advice and ads encouraging proper cardiovascular exercise and preventative measures.

This month our calendar of events is full to bursting with wonderful activities and exciting plays, events and places to visit. Enjoy!
