49th
Birmingham
International Festival
MOROCCO
If you have ever wanted to travel to an exotic land, then you definitely want to take a
trip to Birmingham between the 16th and 18th of April and enjoy the huge Discover Morocco
festival in Linn Park.
One of the main highlights will be the simulated archeological dig corresponding to the
artifacts from Sijilmasa, an ancient Moroccan oasis, on display at the Birmingham Civil
Rights Museum.
There will be Moroccan jewelry-making, a book walk, desert animals (even camel rides!)
tile art, and folk dancing. Along with the Moroccan merchants and artisans, authentic
Moroccan food will be available at the Taste of Morocco section of the park.
For soccer aficionados, the first International Festival CUP will showcase National
Under-18 Men's Teams from the USA, Morocco, Jamaica and Mexico-all World Cup Contenders in
1998.
Moroccan-style music, food and dance will transport you from the streets of Birmingham
to the bazaars of Marrakesh, Agadir, Tangier, Rabat and Casablanca. The event runs
full-tilt from 10 am to 7 pm on April 16th & 17th, and from 10 am until 6 pm on the
18th. This festival is a good way of introducing your family to a taste of another
culture. The sweetened mint tea could become a delightful habit.
If you really
want to lash out for a fabulous and unusual evening, the Ambassador's Dinner is scheduled
for the 17th at 7:00 pm. Price is $175 per person. Cheaper than airline fare to Morocco
and no jet lag.
Advance price tickets are available, or you can pay at the gate: $7 for adults; $5 for
students.
For a full schedule of events, times and admission fees, call the Festival Office at
(205) 252-7652 or visit their website: www.bifsalutes.org
