From The Editor

As we round the corner into June and head toward summer, our thoughts often turn to getting away -- toward summer holidays and recapturing those idyllic days of our youth - or creating new ones.

This issue, we explore the many ways to "get away."

We discover Lake Martin, a popular, central Alabama get-away and, increasingly, a full time address for many who don't want to restrict their lake living to the weekend, but choose to make it a way of life.

We also look at getting farther away. Wayne Greenhaw tells us about his recent trip to Mexico and why no one should let a little age, or even health problems, get in the way of traveling to new and interesting places.

Of course, getting away is mostly a state of mind. Jim Vickrey reminisces about an all-American favorite summer pastime - escaping to a cool dark movie theatre and galloping into new worlds with our favorite movie stars. His article on Montgomery's movie palaces of the past will bring back many a fond memory, I am sure.

As for me, my favorite get-away is going to "the country." An immensely popular Alabama activity, going to the country evokes memories of grandparents' farms and wonder of youth. We are fortunate to live on our great, great, great grandparents' farm. It serves as an ever-present reminder of how linked we all are to each other. As I watch the spring's babies frolic in the pasture (note some of my "babies" on the cover), I feel renewed.

I wish the same for you all.

Ed

PS. This month we start a new feature - Milestones (see pages 16-18) in which we will celebrate your birthdays and anniversaries. Submit your favorite octogenarian, nonagenarian, or centenarian for their birthday announcement today!
