Milestones Married Nearly Seventy-Two YearsBy Annie Mae Turner, Union Springs
Clara and George McKenzie, married on December 27th, 1927 and have rarely spent a day apart since. Before retirement, George managed Alabama Power Company in Tallassee where he worked for nearly 42 years. Clara owned a ladies ready-to-wear store in Tallassee. They moved to Wesley Gardens Retirement Home this past April from Evergreen, Alabama. They are well pleased with their two-room apartment, which is attractively furnished and filled with pictures of children and grandchildren. Before George retired in 1971, they lived at Yates Dam near Tallassee. They have one son, Bill, who will be 70 on December 8. He is in the hospital business and still owns and operates the Evergreen Hospital. He also owns the hospital in Jackson. The McKenzies have one grandson, Gil McKenzie, who is married and has two children with another due in October. The grandchildren like to swim at the family home on Lake Martin. Clara and George McKenzie agree that Wesley Gardens is a very nice place to live, and they have been well received by other residents. Clara jokes and says that George is mentally lazy now that he's retired. They both participate in the many activities provided for residents, that includes bingo, aerobics, church and devotional services, van rides, and special events such as plays and symphonies.
