Hobson City -- 100th Year Celebration

On August 13-15, Hobson City will celebrate their 100th anniversary with a large festival including gigantic fireworks, the unveiling of a new monument, a picnic, a parade, a pageant, and worship services.

Hobson City is near Anniston and across the street (literally) from Oxford. It was incorporated in 1899 by a small neighborhood of black citizens. Their homes had been gerrymandered out of the Oxford city limits by a new mayor whose campaign promise was to get all of the blacks out of town.

According to Mayor Willie M. Snow, few people outside of Hobson City believed the small town would be around very long. One hundred years later, the 836 citizens of Hobson City will proudly celebrate the town's birth in an extravaganza planned for mid-August.

Mayor Snow assures us that the strife surrounding the birth of this town is a thing of the past. "Today, we are on the best of terms with Oxford," she told us.

Happy 100th Birthday, Hobson City!

Anyone wishing to join the celebration may contact the Town of Hobson City at (256) 831-0442.

Bush Leaps for Joy on his 75th

Former President George Bush said he felt like a spring colt after skydiving from 13,000 feet and landing near his presidential library in Texas last month. His third jump occurred days before his 75th birthday and included a 4,500 foot free-fall. He said the experience was "totally exhilarating."

While most of us won't be following in his footsteps any time soon, we should all take his words to heart,

"Old guys can still do stuff, you might was well go for it."

Seeking News of First Loveemail15.gif (9461 bytes)

Through our web site, Alabama Prime Times connects to the world as well as the people of Alabama.  We had an unusual and romantic email message arrive this month from a reader in Melbourne, Australia.

Mara Lee wrote on behalf of her 70-year old sister-in-law, Judith Lee.  Judith is interested in finding out about her first love, Charles Benjamin Cox, a serviceman stationed in Melbourne in 1943.  At the time, he lived in Montgomery.

I hope Mr. Cox is among our readers, or that one of our readers knows of Mr. Cox.   If so, let us know and we will put you in touch.  Call the office at 334-264-9704 or send an email message to prime-times@mindspring.com.
